What Is an Ethos?
Ethos is Latin for “habit.” It is the set of moral habits that shape a person’s character and life.  An ethos bridges belief and action.

An ethos defines and prioritizes the driving convictions that stabilize us amid chaos. It’s the internal code that allows a warrior to act decisively.

Christians who want to contend against the enemy are served well by a warrior ethos.
Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. - 1 Timothy 6:12

THE IMPACT OF AN ETHOS IS LIKE A FRUITFUL TREE

Living with peak performance (fruit) is determined by living decisively, producing confidence that does not hesitate in critical moments (the branches of life). This kind of life grows from deep convictions that provide stability and enable boldness (the trunk). All of this is rooted in beliefs and values that anchor one’s relationships and priorities.

If you don’t like your fruit, fix the root.

3 Reasons a Christian should write a warrior ethos. In the battle space, an ethos…

  1. Keeps identity from dissolving while under pressure

  2. Fortifies direction amidst the chaos of battle

  3. Clarifies the relational connections that are worth fighting

THE INGREDIENTS OF A WARRIOR’S ETHOS

  1. Identity – Who are you? What story defines you?
Identity is shaped through victories, failures, and commitment to purpose.

  2. Relationships – For whom or what do you fight?
Relationships define the sacred trust of your service—family, faith, nation.

  3. Beliefs and Values – What virtues guide you in conflict?
Honor, Courage, Commitment remain central, accompanied by prudence, temperance, faith, and charity.

  4. Legacy – What are you building or contributing to?
A warrior’s ethos directs their ultimate destination—how they want their life to be remembered before God and others .

WHAT KEEPS US FROM WRITING AN ETHOS?

  • We let BUSYNESS with what is seen DISTRACT us from doing the work that isn’t seen

  • The demand for MORAL CLARITY can be intimidating

  • Fear of exposing the inconsistencies between BELIEFS and BEHAVIORS.

WRITING YOUR WARRIOR ETHOS
Four things that happen when you write out your ethos

  1. Writing forces you to move from VAGUE INTENTIONS into VISIBLE COMMITMENTS.

  2. Writing forces you to link your IDENTITY to your HABITS

  3. Writing it invites the world to hold you ACCOUNTABLE

  4. Writing it solidifies the LEGACY you want to build by living a MORAL life

The 7 Steps to Writing a Warrior Ethos

  1. Reflect on what shaped you.
Identify moments of successes, failures, crossroads that formed your character.

  2. Articulate what you’ll fight for.
Clarify what truths and people you’d sacrifice for.

  3. List your values.
Choose guiding virtues that express your inner compass.

  4. Map spiritual connections.
Align what you fight for with self, the greater good, and God.

  5. Clarify your desired destination.
Define the legacy you want across these three spheres.

  6. Craft your warrior philosophy.
Articulate a personal “I am” and “I will” statement for each connection.

  7. Write your Warrior Ethos.
Combine your reflections into one short, actionable, enduring statement that aligns with your faith, duty, and command presence.
