COMMITMENT IS the disposition of being dedicated to a relationship, cause, or activity that will enable one to experience the vision God has birthed in their heart.

Attitudes and Beliefs Driving Lower Commitment

  • Short-term mindset: Many prioritize flexibility, personal well-being, and avoid long-term obligations if they don’t see clear personal benefit, seeking jobs and relationships that match their evolving values.

  • Skepticism and lack of loyalty: After years of corporate downsizing and societal change, people are less willing to commit deeply—there’s a widespread belief that loyalty is not reciprocated, so investment in institutions (work, organizations, even marriage) is lower.

  • Need for meaningfulness: Meaningful work and authentic connections are more valued than titles or stability; if people don’t feel valued or find a sense of purpose, their willingness to commit plummets.

  • Desire for autonomy and personal growth: Generations like Gen Z opt for roles that offer flexibility, freedom, and align with their values—commitment is high only when personal growth and fulfillment are perceived.

  • Erosion of basic trust: Fewer people believe institutions have their best interests at heart; declining trust, pressure, and organizational chaos all undermine commitment.

  • Burnout and overload: Constant change, uncertainty, and pressure to do more with less have left many exhausted, wary of overcommitting to something they feel might not last or be worth it.

FOUR things people, with growing commitment to God do

  1. They GUARD their heart by letting God shape their commitment. If He isn’t doing it, someone else will.
Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

  2. They don’t look back and DAYDREAM about what could have been. Look forward to what God has next for them with ANTICIPATION.
Luke 9:62: “Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’”

  3. They are prepared and willing to LOSE their life for Jesus
Luke 9:23-24 - “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.”

  4. Their whole CONSTITUTION is aimed at loving God and others
Mark 12:30-31a - Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
