Can our prayer life cultivate the virtue of temperance? In this episode, Milo and Olivia consider the altar of incense and what lessons we can draw from the daily morning and evening prayers that were offered in the tabernacle.

MORE ABOUT TEMPERANCE

  • Temperance is “enjoying good things at the right time, in the right place, and in the right way.” It harmonizes and orients desires so that pleasures are rightly enjoyed and do not enslave

  • Growing in temperance will expose our cognitive limitations, relational responsibilities, personal history, and emotional weaknesses.

Prayer is the daily, messy practice where the temperament life takes meaningful shape.

1. Prayer is the practice of reflecting on God’s faithfulness in my life

  • I reflect on who God is as Creator, King, and Author of Life

  • I reflect on the sacrifice that was made

  • I reflect on the purity I need

  • I reflect on my need for daily bread

  • I reflect on my need for light in the darkness

2. Prayer is the practice of knowing I don’t know enough and God knows that

  • I articulate the doubts, frustrations, and uncertainties to a God who knows all things

  • I articulate praise to God because my limitations do not hinder his faithfulness

3. Prayer becomes a place for destructive emotions and thoughts to be tempered:

  • Anger that overpowers reason

  • Passion that prompts overindulgence

  • Fear that justifies escapism

  • Sorrow that leads to isolation

  • Offense that seeks revenge

  • Euphoria that leads to inappropriate behavior

4. Prayer the practice of articulating dependence on God
I am mindful of the light I need and the bread I require to daily live
