INTRODUCTION
Milo and Olivia kick off a new series on the Tabernacle and how it can serve as a model for understanding how God wants to spiritually form us for a life of worship. In this kickoff episode they explore the theology and virtue that is developed by entering through the gate.
THE GATE
The Gate is the only way to enter into outer court where worship takes place. Through the gate, sacrifice, cleansing, prayer, and complete trust in God are developed.
The Gate’s three colors each symbolize God’s nature and role:
Blue represents God’s Divinity
Blue is the color of creation. In Egypt, gods were associated with created things like the sun, the river, and animals. But Israel is to understand that God is not a created thing, rather the Creator. His divine origin is unlike any god Israel had ever known.Purple represents God’s Royalty
Purple is the color of royalty. Egypt had kings who ruled by power and oppression. Purple at the gate signifies that God is there true King, not a pharaoh. Israel is invited into a relationship with God. This is in stark contrast to what it was like to be enslaved and live under the tyranny of pharaoh.Scarlet represents God’s Authority
The color scarlet would have recalled blood-pledges, passover, and now sacrifice. It taught that access to God comes through atonement, not merit. God is the ultimate authority over life.
By choosing the Gate, PRUDENCE is the virtue that is formed
Prudence enables us to discern the appropriate course of action in any situation and to choose the right means to achieve good. It is practical wisdom or sound judgment.
Three Convictions that the Prudent Life Cultivates
When I choose a life that is pointed and moving towards God, on his terms I orient the whole of my life around these three convictions
Because God is Creator of all things I prudently choose the appropriate path he has created for me. The result is that I abandon a life of reckless wandering.
Because God is King, I prudently recognize that I come with nothing that he needs. The result is that I abandon a life of misplaced confidence.
Because God is the Authority, I prudently observe his way of defining what it means to truly live. The result is that I abandon a life that is thoughtless and fickle.
